Sound City - Bonus Features
I just rented “Sound City” from the only remaining video store in town, expecting to be overwhelmed with all the bonus goodies on the disc. As it turns out, I was mistaken. There were only 3 bonus features, and all 3 of them were “behind the scenes” clips about the new songs on the film’s soundtrack. Basically, just three self-indulgent videos that document a bunch of old rockers jamming together with some Dave Grohl songs.
I was hoping to see out takes from interviews for the film. The documentary is centered around this legendary hole-in-the-wall studio in California, and all the many legendary albums recorded there over the years. At the end of the movie, there are snippets of interviews that didn’t make the final cut of the movie. The one I wanted to see most? Weezer.
Weezer recorded their second album, Pinkerton, at Sound City back in the late 90’s. It’s an emotionally-confused, frustrated and noisy teen-angst record, and also now a cult classic amongst Weezer fans.
I was hoping to see a bonus interview with Weezer, discussing what it was like to record Pinkerton at Sound City. No such luck with the DVD — there are no bonus interviews on it.
However, social media has saved the day! Check out this (somewhat bland) interview outtake from Sound City:
Anyways, back to the film… It’s an enjoyable piece of biased rock ‘n’ roll propaganda, and a great watch for diehard music fans that love classic albums like Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors, Nirvana’s Nevermind, or Johnny Cash’s American Recordings series with Rick Rubin. It’s also worth mentioning that the footage is *gorgeous*. Just don’t expect much from the bonus features unless you’re a diehard Foo Fighters fan that collects all their albums. Rent it online and don’t worry about the bonus features. They’re just not worth it.
kbye!
